Outdoor Activities

We are blessed with wide range of outdoor activities right on our doorstep at the Arches. Within a few minutes drive (sometimes even a walk), you can be on the driving down the fairway at a nearby golf course, casting you line on the River Clare or Lough Corrib, enjoying a quiet cycle or walk along a secluded nature trail or getting your adrenalin racing with a gallop through the local countryside on horseback.

Golf
There a number of excellent Golf Courses nearby including Cregmore Park, Tuam Golf Club, Athenry Golf Club, Galway Bay Golf Resort, North & West Coast Links & Mountbellew Golf Club. All of these courses are open to visitors and if you check with reception, we may be able to organise a discount on green fees. If you don’t have time for a full round but would like to hit a few balls none the less, you should check out Cregboy Golf Academy. Situated just a few minutes down the road from us you can hit a few balls on the range or even book in for a lesson.

Fishing
We’re situated just 100m from the River Clare and a few miles from Lough Corrib so you’ve no excuse not bring your rod and waders along for your stay with us.   Both the Corrib & The Clare are renowned for their stocks of Salmon, Trout, Pike and Coarse Fish. The Clare River has an abundance of above average size trout. Wouldn’t it be lovely to spend a long balmy summer day walking for miles in the peace and quiet, in search of the river ‘s bounty sipping flies. An added bonus is that the Clare river has a huge run of Atlantic salmon, large spring fish arriving in late April and early May, and a fantastic grilse run in June and July.

Lough Corrib is one of the best game fisheries in the world and it is a wonderful place to experience what Ireland has to offer both in terms of the game angling and the hospitality of the local people. It is a vast lake of 44,000 acres and stretches some thirty five miles from Galway City to Maam Bridge in Connemara. The season for brown trout on Lough Corrib opens on February 15th and trout are usually caught on fly from the very first day of the season.

At the Arches, we can help you with Salmon Licenses, local permits as well as information on the best spots to fish and where to go for tackle.

Walking & Cycling
Within a few minutes of leaving our front door you can be rambling down quiet country roads soaking up all that the Co. Galway countryside has to offer. If you’d like to explore a bit more of what Gaway has to offer we’re not too far from Knockma Wood, Renville Park, Salthill Prom and Cong. For the serious walker, its worth checking out The Guide to Co. Galway Walking and Cycling Routes.

For cycling enthusiasts, again there are plenty of quiet routes in the locality and if Mountain Biking is your thing, check out trailbadger.com for information on the best routes in Galway.

Horse Riding
We’re in the heart of horsey country here. Galway Racecourse is on 4 miles away. The stone walls made famous by the Galway Blazers and North Galway Hunts can be seen from every window of the hotel. Beautiful Connemara ponies populate the lush green fields around us. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a committed enthusiast you’ll have ample opportunity to get the adrenalin racing in one of the many equestrian centres located near us. Closest to us are Rockmount Riding Centre and Galway Equestrian Centre, who both cater for beginners and experienced riders. For the more adventurous, why not try a day’s hunting with the world famous Galway Blazers or North Galway Foxhounds.
